A Droid for charity

Loads of people have been emailing me asking if i have ever created a step by step guide to making a droid. The answer is no, however, a few months ago I was asked by a local charity group to make a static R2D2 style Droid that could be used for collecting money at events. The idea would be that children could place coins into the Droids head and they would drop down into the collecting bucket in the body. With this as my brief and only a couple of months to complete the build this is what I created. I produced a step by step photo logo as the build progressed and here it is in full.

I initially thought it would be a great idea to make an R4-P17, head only,but gradually it evolved adding an R2D2 style body.
The whole build was on a budget of next to nothing.The dome for example was made from a metal light shade from a local DIY shop. The body, feet and legs are all wood ranging from MDF to hardboard. The body cylinder is made from hardboard and the detailing carved into it. Some of the parts like the holo eyes are old resin ones that were given to me which i never used on other droid builds. The coin slots for example where made out of cardboard and used on my R6 build but then later replaced with metal, these were now used on this Droid. The hoses on the feet is old tubing and most of the metal parts are just scrounged. The head does turn manually on an old lazy susan bearing. There are lights in the head and they flash and look R2D2'ish. They are powered from a small 4amp 12v battery in the head so no complex electronics are needed.
The whole Droid comes apart, legs and head so it can be moved around in a normal car. It is heavy being made from mainly wood but this gives it an advantage in that I wont get knocked over easily. A tube passes from the head down into the body for the coins to travel down. Eventually I will add a simple circuit to trigger a beep sound when money is placed in the tube as it will add extra character to the whole experience.

I hope this help anyone wanting to make a Droid on a seriously low budget, in a very short space of time.
