Paper Microfluidic Devices

Materials:

• Wax-printed paper provided by the instructors

• Diluted food coloring dyes

Protocol:

We started by placing the wax-printed paper on a hot plate at 150C for 120 sec, or until we could observe the black lines on both sides of the paper (this means that the wax has traversed the paper and delineated the channel throughout the entire thickness of the paper)

We then took 3 pipetters with 3 different colors and dropped a bit of the 3 colors on the 3 different rounded ends, we tried to time it so that the 3 drops would touch the ends simultaneously. Some of the devices didnít work, the reason was because the wax didnít go through the paper, leaving the channel open. We could therefore observe that the colors wouldnít stay inside the channels but they would wet the entire paper. On the successful devices it was easy to observe how the colors were mixing through the main channel thanks to diffusion
