It has happened so many times before. You look over at your 3D-Printer filament supply, and see scraps of filament, hardly a yard long, hanging off of their rolls. You ask yourself the question, What am I supposed to do with this? Well, have I got an answer for you. This is a step-by-step tutorial in making your very own filament bracelets and rings.
The best part about this is that you can customize them, making your bracelet or ring different sizes and colors. In the ring or bracelet, you can have two different colors, one for the printed connector and one for the filament part of the bracelet. You can size the bracelet or ring to fit you just by cutting the filament to fit your wrist or finger. Also, these are very simple to make, and with simple materials, so you could easily make ten of them in one night. In addition, this is an open source project, so the files can be modified. This allows makers to modify the CAD files so the connectors can be different shapes and sizes. You could possibly change the file so that the connector is in the shape of a diamond. This is only the simplest version, but there are so many different ways this project could go.
Step 1: Materials
First, gather your materials. You will need: pliers, wire cutters, 3D-printed connector, super glue, and leftover 3D-printer filament. These will all be used in later steps. The links to the CAD files are below. There is a 3 mm filament file and 1.75 mm filament file. The 3 mm filament file is titled braceletring_connector_3_mm_filament, while the 1.75 mm filament file is titled braceletring_connector_175_mm_filament.braceletring_connector_175_mm_filament.stl
Step 2: Cut Filament to Desired Size
Measure your filament around your wrist or finger. Then, take that measurement and cut the filament with the wire cutters, or another cutting tool.
Step 3: Bend the Filament
Next, take the pliers and bend the filament in half and at the ends, so that each end will be able to slide easily into the connector, and that the filament is in a sort of semi-circle shape.
Step 4: Gluing the Ring/Bracelet
Next, plug one side of the filament into one side of the connector. Then, plug in the other side in to see how the finished product will look. If it has any kinks in it, round them out. Now, unplug the filament for gluing. Take the super glue and place a drop in each side of the connector. Plug the filament into each side as you just did, and hold both sides in for one minute. After the one minute is up, leave the ring to dry for twenty-four hours. NOTE: IF YOU ARE MAKING A BRACELET, MAKE SURE YOU ONLY GLUE ONE SIDE INTO THE CONNECTOR, SO THAT YOU CAN UNPLUG THAT ONE SIDE OF THE BRACELET WHEN YOU ARE REMOVING OR PUTTING IT ON YOUR HAND.
Step 5: The Finished Product!
Now, you have your very own ring or bracelet, depending on which one you built. The possibilities are limitless from here, as you can modify the CAD file to suit your needs. Enjoy!
