Interactive LED Puzzle Lamp

Overview

This LED lamp is an interactive design product. It is a rectangular prism base that can hold in multiple light slots that complete the circuit and light up. It gives users the power to manipulate the design and change the lights based on several situations and as they see fit.

Material

  • While translucent plexi board, 1/8 inch thickness

  • Adherent: Super glue

  • 10 LED lights

  • Copper tape

  • 5 3V coin batteries

  • Magic tape

Step 1: Prepare the laser cut final and test the pieces

Draw the outline of the skeleton of the map using illustrator. This will be the guideline for the laser cut file. Cut the pieces from the plexi glass then make sure everything fits together like a puzzle. It is important to take into consideration the thickness of the plexi otherwise the prism and pieces wouldn't fit perfectly.

    For the prism:

    3 rectangular pieces 2in*10in

    2 square pieces 1.76in*1.76in

    For the LED holders:

    10 right triangles 2.22in*1.57in*1.57in

10 right triangles 2.22in*1.57in*1.57in with 0.55inc*0.55inch square hollowed from the middle

    For the frame:

2 rectangular pieces 2in*10in, emptied in a pattern as shown in the figure, the size of the whole is a right triangle 2.26in*1.6in*1.6in

Step 2: Set up the LED on the puzzle pieces

The puzzle pieces are made as right triangles. On the full piece, stick an LED using conductive tape. Make sure to remember the positive and negative sides, and to have a gap in the conductive tape on the back. Use the other piece that is hollow to cover the triangle. This other piece serves an aesthetic purpose and protects the structure as well.

Step 3: Fixing the batteries on the skeleton

Use the rectangular piece to fix the coin batteries in parallel circuits. Divide the rectangle into 5 sections, each section gets one coin battery connected to 2 LED lights in parallel. The outer side has the conductive tape where the LED pieces will be placed. It is helpful to mark these sections with pencil and it gives u sense where to exactly break the circuit so that the LED piece would complete it. The hidden side contains the batteries and the rest of the circuit. Use the magic tape to fix the batteries. The magic tape is invisible so it wouldn't show when the LEDs are lit. Do this procedure for all 5 sections.

    Step 4: Testing

Before you assemble the prism, make sure you test the pieces to make sure you did not switch the positive and negative. Using super glue add the the frame where the LED pieces will be popped in. Go again with the testing process to be extra sure that you fixed it perfectly. Then you can add the rest of the pieces to complete the rectangular prism.
