This is a part of my battery series telling you how to make a battery with quarters. Enjoy!
Step 1: Materials
You will need:
~ some salt
~ some aluminum foil
~ 10 quarters
~ a piece of paper
~ a bowl
~ some vinegar
~ two pieces of wire
~ some scissors
~ an LED or multimeter
Step 2: Mixing
You will start by putting some vinegar in a bowl then some salt. Make sure the salt is completely dissolved into the vinegar.
Step 3: CuttingNext, cut 10 circles of paper the same size as the quarters. Soak them in the salt-vinegar mixture.
Step 4: More cutting
Next, cut 10 more circles the same size as the quarters, except this time out of the aluminum foil instead of paper.
Take the paper circles out of the salt-vinegar solution and begin making the battery. Lay the materials down in this order: foil, paper, quarter, until you have used all the quarters. When you are done you may connect the wires to the LED and to opposite sides of the battery.
Step 6: How it works
This is a dry battery, like a AA or AAA, having only a little bit of moisture. A wet battery, such as a car battery, is full of liquid chemicals. The salt-vinegar solution is an electrolyte. It reacts with the metals, which are electrodes. Since there are two kinds of metals (the quarters and the foil) one metal reacts more strongly than the other, which leaves an electrical potential difference (voltage) between the two types of metals.
