As far as the build my lab contest you could use this to draw plans with a regular dry-erase marker, then use the UV light and the highlighter for the special parts!

I'll let you in on one more secret with UV lights! They 'charge' glowing objects instantly!
Lets get started!

Step 1: Ingredients:

Electronics:
  • 4 (or 3) AA (or AAA) battery holder (AAs are better than AAAs)
  • SPST switch (on/off switch)
  • Ultraviolet LEDs / Blacklight with appropriate resistors
  • Perfboard
  • Wire
  • Electrical Tape
  • Yellow highlighter
  • Items:
  • K'NEX swivly thingy (see picture)
  • A dry erase board or. . .
  • a big poster with that shiny protective coating. Make sure the backside is all white and is also coated.
  • 10 tacks. Clear plastic green ones will glow under the UV light.
  • Tools:
  • Wire stripper/cutter
  • Soldering iron
  • Tool to cut perfboard
  • Hot glue

  • Step 2: Finding a Poster

  • Find a big poster covered in that shiny protective coating. Make sure the backside is white and is also coated.
  • Find a convenient place on your wall
  • Tape or tack up the poster, with the white-side out.

  • This poster works as a dry-erase board so you can use your dry erase markers on it too. It may take a little bit of work to clean it though. Usually a wet paper towel followed by a dry paper towel does the trick.

    Step 3: Create the Circuit

The circuit is quite simple. All you need to do is to solder 9 LEDs in parallel circuit. Then add a toggle switch to wire going from the GND of the battery to the common GND on your perf. Then add a resistor to the positive. This will change depending on the type of UV you have.

Then you need to attach the perf board to the battery case. I used one of those K'NEX swivly, which allows me to tilt it in multiple directions. See pictures for more instruction.

    Step 4: Enjoy!

Point your UV flashlight at the poster. If you are right-handed you may want to put the light on the left side of the poster so that you can see as you are writing and vice versa. Turn them on and start to draw with a yellow highligher! Watch in awe as the ink glows! Have fun looking at different things under the black light. Neon colors (especially bright green) literally glow!

P.S. UV shows sweat and stains on clothing and fabric. So take a good long second to think before shining them on your light-colored bed sheets ;)

Also after about an hour the highlighter ink almost becomes invisble on the poster, so you can draw over it.
