Ever wondered how cool it would be if the lights got turned on as soon as you step into a room or when you wake up in the middle of the night and the lights get turned on automatically. I present to you the geeky automatic beacon light that is a great desk light or can be used as a bed light.
The project can be easily built in a day or two using materials that can be easily found online.
The light gets turned on as soon as the sensor detects any person nearby. The sensor uses Infrared waves and hence would detect people even in pitch darkness.

Step 1: Disassembling the beacon light
I wanted to use the project specifically for a bed light hence i had to get rid of the motor that rotates the light. The rotating light is really annoying and hence had to be removed. I have even replaced the bulb with an high power led so that it will work over a 9v power supply.
Disassembling the Beacon light is really easy. The model i have purchased over the internet had to be just unscrewed to remove all parts.
Step 2: Electronics
The basic circuit for PIR sensor is easily available over the internet. I have used two 9v batteries to isolate the power supply that powers up the led and the power supply that powers the PIR sensor.
I have used a voltage regulator to convert 9v to 5v .The 5v is used as an input power supply for the PIR sensor. The PIR sensor would send a small signal to transistor whenever it sees any movement or change in heat signatures. The transistor in turn would operate the relay completing the LED circuit.
Step 3: Build
I have used jumper wires to connect all the electronics together.
The beacon light had enough space to fit the complete electronics inside. The PIR sensor would be present outside to detect any changes in the room. The PIR sensor can be tuned to change the delay and range of sensor detection.
Step 4: Final
The automatic Beacon light can now be enjoyed. The beacon light is portable and can be placed anywhere in the room.
Your friends would freak out as soon as they step into your room.
If the rotating light would not annoy you, you can leave the motor intact.
