Homemade, All-Natural, World Changing Toothpaste

Here's a recipe for an all-natural toothpaste that you can feel good about using. It makes your mouth feel clean and refreshed, and your teeth sparkling white.

This recipe combines information from blogs, Facebook posts, essential oil and herb catalogs, ingredient lists from Tom's of Maine and Earthpaste Toothpaste, and Ayurveda. I have tried a number of different all-natural recipes, and I wanted to make something that took the best elements of it all, and make a paste that was pleasant both in taste and texture.

Feel free to adjust amounts to your liking, eliminating and/or adding ingredients. I keep the paste in a jar, and use a very small spatula to apply a generous amount on my toothbrush. Brush as long as you can, the longer, the better. I incorporate the "Oil Pulling" method, swishing the oil mixture around my mouth, pulling it through my teeth. Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic practice not just for teeth and gum care, but for healing and detoxifying the entire body. Check it out.

I believe that we can begin to change the world with just one happy and healthy smile. Happiness is Health and Health is Wealth. One world, One Love!

*Please note*

I used Neem oil that was labeled "for the garden." You may want to use Neem oil specifically used for cosmetic purposes, but I had this bottle on hand for organic gardening, and since the label says 100% pure and organic I kept it in the mix.

Neem oil also has a strong odor. Mixed with everything else, it isn't as noticeable, but if you are sensitive to the smell, you may want to use less. I saw a post on a forum where someone tried oil pulling just with pure Neem oil to rid of a mouth infection. His gums were bleeding the next day. So increase at your own risk.

Also, "oil pulling" is usually done with pure sesame or coconut oil, and because the toothpaste contains other ingredients like baking soda and neem oil, you may want to test how much "pulling" your gums will be able to handle. If you find that this recipe irritates your gums, you may want to also want to reduce the amount of baking soda, or just add more coconut oil.

Take note that coconut oil is liquid when the temperature is above 75 degrees F, and a solid when below. So during warm days you may want to give your container a shake, and use a spoon.

Step 1: Gather your ingredients.

You can find most of these ingredients at your local natural food and wellness store or online. The most expensive ingredients are the Essential Oils. Since I'm a bit of a Tree Hugger I had these ingredients on hand. You don't have to use every essential oil listed, just one would work fine.

1 1/2 C Coconut Oil

4 Tbs Baking Soda

1/2 C. Redmond Clay

1 Tbs Neem Oil

10 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil

10 drops Clove Essential Oil

20 drops Sweet Orange Oil

20 drops Peppermint Oil

Step 2: Measure and melt your coconut oil.

Gently melt about 1 1/2 cups of coconut oil in a small saucepan over the stove. Melting coconut oil in a microwave oven is not recommended, as it can get very, very hot. It does not take a lot of heat to melt the oil. As soon as 1/3 of the oil is melted, take off the heat and continue to stir, the rest will melt soon after.

Transfer the oil into a medium size bowl.

Step 3: Add 4 Tbs of Baking Soda.

Baking Soda does not dissolve in oil, so just stir in until there are no lumps.

Step 4: Add 1 Tbs of Neem Oil.

Step 5: Add 1/2 C of Redmond Clay.

Stir until there are no lumps. A whisk makes this step easier.

Step 6: Add the Essential Oils.

Count your drops in, then stir. You can adjust your drops to your liking, but keep in mind that the clove oil is very strong, compared to the others.

Step 7: Pour mixture into a lidded container.

The mixture will solidify as it reaches back to room temperature.

Step 8: Brush your teeth and floss.
